Visiting Paris was a long-held dream realized for my 50th birthday. My choice of subjects sprang from desiring to be in, and imagining the Paris of, the 1920s. Walking the streets I'd read about over the years was exhilarating. I used much of my time thinking and writing about what it means to me to be an artist. A friend remarked how she appreciates my work even more after her own first trip to Paris.
Curator Adrienne Fuzee wrote about my Paris images, which she included in an online exhibition (see links):
"Absent any human presence, Hyder's work transcends photographic notions of narration, voyeurism, and observation to stimulate active engagement of the viewer's imagination. Her photographs are passionate objects that seek our presence and our stories; mute reminders that our lives contribute to the history of our environs. What tales are lived behind these shuttered windows, by the river, on these steps? Questions are radiantly posed in these photographs. The answer is in us."
