As a young girl, I watched many 1930s and 40s movies on 1950s late afternoon and late night (with my mother) tv, thus finding my passion for New York City, while learning how to be a tough cookie in a world where being called a dame was a compliment.

Moving to San Francisco in 1969 did nothing to diminish that passion and I always look forward to my visits and walking the streets with camera in hand. As I began photographing in color in the early 90s, I found a different way of looking at this city I originally grew to love through black & white, rather gritty imagery. The more familiar I become with NYC's varied neighborhoods, the knowledge that I'll never be done photographing there becomes a concrete reality.

I came close to moving to NYC in 2002 until I found an apartment in the Castro that affords me a place to have my work continually on display. On a walk up the street on one particularly beautiful day, I questioned my move and literally heard the words "I no longer need to be a New Yorker in this lifetime." Since then I was curated into a 3-photographer exhibition at Uma Gallery, made three month-long visits, and am looking forward to other exhibitions and opportunities to work in that area.
